Four pillars, eight characters
The year, month, day, and hour of birth form the four pillars. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, which creates eight characters in total. A reading looks at their relationships rather than assigning a life story to one character.
The Five Elements
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are images for growth, expression, grounding, discernment, and observation. They are not five personality boxes. Their meaning depends on season, placement, and relationship within the full chart.
